Providence Has Its Heart in the Right Place, but Not Much Else

Providence is best described as a faith-based romance in the Nicholas Sparks vein, a just-in-time-for-Valentine's film for Christians. But a plodding narrative, dull characters and an absence of dialogue don't leave much for us to fall in love with. 1 out of 5.

"Hail, Caesar!" is a Goofy Valentine to Hollywood's Golden Age

In what's easily one of the Coen Brothers' zaniest movies about Hollywood's inner workings since Barton Fink, the audience is transported back to the 1950s where one very busy man tries to keep one hectic movie studio's biggest stars out of trouble.

The Choice: Predestined for Predictability

The Choice may have emotional stakes but delivers neither star power nor screenwriting prowess. It's a Hallmark movie with better production values

"Kung Fu Panda's" Third Chapter Still Has Plenty of Kick

While no one would mistake it for a Pixar level of greatness in terms of creativity or high-brow storytelling prowess, the Kung Fu Panda trilogy has been a consistently fun and family-friendly cinematic diversion for eight years now

"The Finest Hours" Feels Waterlogged

Though based on a real incident, the story and characters in The Finest Hours are overly familiar at best, clichés or cardboard cutouts at worst. The visuals aren't much better.

"Norm of the North" is Hard to Bear

Nothing that Norm of the North does to get laughs feels original. It's all been done before, and better, in superior films from the same genre

"The 5th Wave" Crashes and Burns into Dystopian Oblivion

After The Hunger Games franchise (which only got worse as the sequels kept coming), Divergent and its lackluster follow-up, The Giver, the two Maze Runner films, Ender’s Game and a slew of others, it's clear that it takes far more than a plucky youngster wrestling with the apocalypse to make a compelling movie

"Joy": Lawrence is So Good, She Can Make a Movie about a Mop Sparkle

It's a tribute to Lawrence's talent that a story about a mop works so well. Not only does Lawrence hold her own—and shine—with a character she's a decade too young to play, she's still engaging enough, all by herself, to keep you invested.

"Concussion" Tells a Hard Truth; The NFL Blocks It

With both a powerful performance by Will Smith and an equally powerful condemnation of the practices of the NFL, Concussion brings this controversy to the open public.

Sunny "Yellow Day" Surprises as Faith-Based Art

On the surface,Yellow Day promises to deliver on every Christian movie cliché you can imagine. Instead, the film draws its audience into a rich narrative where common lessons from the Bible are reframed in a new and compelling background.

"Star Wars VII" Awakens a Force of a Franchise

Star Wars: The Force Awakens not only brings back beloved characters from episodes IV through VI, but it accomplishes something even more important for the franchise's future: it introduces a group of distinctly memorable principal characters who will be crucial to the next two films.

"In the Heart of the Sea" is Under-whale-ming

Having now seen In the Heart of the Sea, I lean toward the more negative interpretation. In the Heart of the Sea isn't outright bad so much as it is—if you'll pardon the pun—underwhaleming.

"The Letters" Canonizes Mother Teresa to the Exclusion of Making Her Human

Despite this rich and complex resource, The Letters doesn't come close to taking advantage of its namesake. Its portrayal is pretty straightforward, its surprises more biographical than spiritual.

"The Good Dinosaur" Falls Short of Extraordinary

The Good Dinosaur tries too much, and ends up tripping over itself. It can’t decide what it wants to be; a dinosaur movie? A coming of age film? A western? An adventure of courage and friendship?

"Creed" Packs a Franchise-Reinvigorating Punch

Sneak Peek: "Risen" is the Ultimate Manhunt

Coming to theaters February 19th, RISEN follows the Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of Clavius, a powerful Roman Military Tribune.  He must solve the mystery of what happened to Jesus in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah.

Gov. Huckabee To Make Cameo in 'God's Not Dead 2'

‘God’s Not Dead 2’ is adding another familiar name to its already impressive cast. Gov. Mike Huckabee has just announced he will be making an appearance, as himself, in the faith-based film.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" Even Better Than The Book

The film somehow takes the mediocre text of the book and elevates it to a top notch film.  If you have never read the books but only amerced yourself in the movie franchise you will engage with this one from the first frame.

"Love the Coopers" Can't Compete with Superior Holiday Home Viewing Options

Although it improves as it goes, Love the Coopers digs a deep enough hole early on that, by the time it manages to dig itself out, it’s hard to know if the effort was worthwhile.
