Little Gods in the Shadows

Southside Baptist Church
Sunday, February 8, 2015 - Evening Service
Genesis 31

Summary: As we continue looking at the life of Jacob, we find him and his family fleeing from Laban, and we see how the entrance of sin and an inability to fully trust God complicates matters. Looking at Jacob and Rachel, we consider the idols in our own lives, and our struggles to give them up.

Acts 10:7-15

7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. 9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: 10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, 11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. 14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Salvation: The Where?

The Daily Pulse (Saturday, February 7, 2014): So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle. John 19:16-18 (NIV)

Keep The Faith

"Keep the faith." In WHAT? Knowing God's definition of "faith" is critical to to knowing God Himself. Hint: biblical faith is not superstition, as used by religious people asking you to believe something illogical and irrational: "Take it on faith." Faith is simply TRUST in a rational promise. It is "taking God's Word" for it.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
"Who do you say that I am?" Jesus asked his disciples that question halfway through his public ministry after the polls showed a dismal answer from the public. Jesus was "running for Messiah," but few Israelites recognized that. Jesus is now asking that same question to each human on the planet.

Positional Truth (10) - Knowing PT through the Revelation of the Spirit

We must KNOW the TRUTH of who we are in Christ to experience its reality (John 8:31-32), and only the SPIRIT can REVEAL this TRUTH to us. As we commune with Him, we ask Him to (1) reveal to us the Truth, and (2) help us put it into practice. As we act on it, trusting in the Spirit, the reality of our New Man (spirit) is manifested.

Salvation: The Why?

The Daily Pulse (Thursday, February 5, 2015): There is no one righteous, not even one…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:10, 23 (NIV)
