Reading the Bathroom Mirror as Text

In this message Pastor Rich Braaksma is going to compare and contrast what we typically think of when we think of “Missions” or “Missionaries” with the parable of the living and breathing YOU… as seen this morning in your bathroom mirror.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go…”
Jesus in Matthew 28:17-18, NIV

“He was first and foremost an artist. And by “artist,” of course, I mean a Christian concerned about the art of living well and living lovingly.”
Cornel West, Public Intellectual

“Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”
Jesus in Matthew 6:10

We are in a war between dullness and astonishment. The most critical issue facing Christians is not abortion, pornography, the disintegration of the family, moral absolutes, MTV, drugs, racism, sexuality, or school prayer. The critical issue today is dullness. We have lost our astonishment. The Good News is no longer good news, it is okay news. Christianity is no longer life changing, it is life enhancing. Jesus doesn't change people into wild-eyed radicals anymore; He changes them into "nice people."
Robert Farrar Capon

You have been raised with Christ… For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Paul in Col 3:1,3

Jesus often deconstructed commonly held cultural beliefs, re-framing what people thought they knew.
Today we ask... what are our misguided cultural philosophies... what are our superficial religious catch-phrases?
God search, know, show, lead us.

The Evidence Of God's Hand on His People is Grace - KLPTV.ORG

The Lord releases grace as a river of life pushing and shoving us to holiness and freedom from sin. Grace is the release of God's power inside each believer causing, first desires to obey and serve Him, and secondly power to fulfill His will. "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me" 2 Cor 12:9 (KJV). Before salvation, "sin has reigned unto death," but in Christ, "even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 5:21 (KJV) "... it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." Phil 2:13 (NKJV)

"We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him." 1 John 5:18 (NKJV)

God's hand is upon His true children and they are radically changed from His power of new birth. The sincere religious people who attend church meetings or just live their lives, falsely believing they have a relationship with God, are exposed by the fact they still live in sin, instead of experiencing God's heavy hand of Fatherhood and the resulting blessing of the power of right living!

Sermon, December 2014

Offence of the Cross

How did we get to the point where we don't take offense of the cross being out?
Chi Rho the first two "greek" letters in spelling of Christ. The cross has become fashionable item. The cross should represent the blood of Jesus who bled and died for you: Drove nails in hands and feet, pieced in the side, crown of thorns on His head. Imagine the cross being a firing squad, and you are innocent of sin or what was accused. Jesus wants us to know that in the cross there is life. A lot of us don't understand the purpose of the cross, that it gives us eternal life. The cross was given to us because it was prophesied that he was going to be on the cross before Jesus was born. When you are being crucified you are naked, when Jesus was crucified he was naked, tried to shame him. He took our shame when He was crucified. Transgressions are sins that you do that you don't know you are doing, when you didn't know any better. Iniquities are sins that you do deliberately. Jesus covered it all. He went through something for me and you. Cross of salvation. Paul preached the cross and Jesus Christ. The cross will set you free. Do you understand what Jesus went through for you?

Knowing God through your Emotions - Gratitude

We continue our series on ‘Knowing God through your Emotions’ by looking into how we express gratitude. Are you really a thankful person?

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above”
James 1:17, ESV

"To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything he has given us-- and he has given us everything. Every breath that we draw is a gift of his love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from him.”
Thomas Merton
