Themes of confession and forgiveness blossom late in a film that creates a powerful sense of time and place. That's more than enough to navigate a few bumps in the storytelling.
On paper,Greaterhas all the right elements for a successful Christian movie. But these qualities never quite find their harmony, resulting in a lackluster entry to the ever-growing faith-in-football genre.
The Ben-Hur box office numbers for opening weekend were disappointing (to say the least), but that doesn’t mean Hollywood should start writing off religious movies. Here's why faith-based movies are worth producing.
The story of Ben-Hur is a timeless one. It is a story about love, betrayal and ultimately forgiveness. It's no surprise then that the Lew Wallace novel that originated this story has been adapted to the big screen so many times. Most famously, the 1959 classic adaptation starred Charlton Heston in the lead role and went on to win 11 Academy Awards. The newest remake — which arrives in theaters Friday — attempts to introduce a new generation to the classic tale.
When was the last time you sat back and let a movie gently take you where it wanted, without feeling worried that something objectionable was just around the corner? It was probably a Disney movie from a long time ago. Pete's Dragon is, if not exactly fresh, then at least far from frenetic.
You don’t have to be a music lover to appreciate this inspiring story of a woman who believed in the power of music—and the men who worked to make her unlikely dream come true. As touching as it is hilarious, Florence Foster Jenkinsis above all a love story sure to make your heart sing.
Nine Lives manages a few solid and surprising laughs. Although the film surprisingly isn’t as kid-friendly as you would expect, it offers a formula that families will quickly recognize.
This Super Villain comic book movie, made up mostly of second-tier bad guys from the DC Universe, is a mess. Between the patchwork story, tonal schizophrenia, and dark demonic activity, there’s little here that could be considered entertaining.
The fifth installment in the Bourne series is basically business as usual, which isn’t bad if you like that kind of thing. Reasonably suspenseful with nary a dull moment, this is not one of those action movies with snappy asides and flashes of humor. Start to finish it’s a pretty grim ride, but it’s still entertaining.
The third installment of producer J.J. Abrams’ reboot series, Star Trek: Beyond delivers the continuing saga of young Captain Kirk, Commander Spockand the brave crew of the USS Enterprise. While the plot is standard fare, the character development skin deep, and the dialogue nothing to write home about, Beyond brings the signature blend of escapism and somber truths that have drawn audiences to the Star Trek franchise for decades.

Not so much a remake as a re-imagining. It's fairly fun in a fluffy kind of way, but there's no plot to speak of and the effects are nothing to shout about. The Ghostbusters play well together but is that worth the price of a movie these days? Only if you're going to the dollar theater.
While not particularly original, The Secret Life of Pets still manages to win over viewers with its fun characters, simple story, and family-friendly atmosphere. It's your basic summer romp that will keep the kids laughing, and the parents mildly entertained. 3.5 out of 5
Prolific filmmaker Steven Spielberg returns to the director’s chair for his first children’s movie in five years with a surprisingly well-paced and heartfelt adaptation of The BFG by Roald Dahl. The BFG (or, The Big Friendly Giant) is sure to charm young and old alike with its winning protagonist, witty script, gorgeous visuals, and - of course - the gentle giant himself. 4 out of 5.
This fish-in-and-out of water tale doesn't try to match stroke-for-stroke with Finding Nemo when it comes to story-surprise freshness. There's no bad-fish smell here, but the pic's slapstick adventure feels simple, comfortable and smilingly predictable.
A dumb-downed script that relies way too heavily on the charisma, charm, and comedy chops of Kevin Hart. It plays like a Disney Channel movie but with loads of language, violence, and crude humor.
