This adaptation of Psalm 23 features two archaic terms: “shibboleth” and “twyndyllyngs.” A shibboleth (an old Hebrew term) is a phrase, cry, or slogan that distinguishes one group from another; and twyndyllyngs is an old English term from which we get the word “twins.”
The Lord is my Shepherd so I do not lack
In ever green pastures He bids me lie back
Beside the still waters the Lord and I stroll
And there in the stillness He strengthens my soul
He leads me along in the paths I should take
He guides me in righteousness for His name’s sake
And though I may walk through the valley of death
“I shall fear no evil,” is my shibboleth
For You are here with me…Your rod and Your staff
They comfort and shield me…at death I can laugh
You spread out a banquet in view of my foes
You rain Your anointing; my cup overflows
Your goodness and mercy…those sweet twyndyllyngs
Shall follow me…carry me…on their great wings
And I shall dwell in your house all of my days
Abiding forever and singing your praise
