As part of the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, Pastor Dean takes a few minutes to explain why it is important to really consider the things and people that are valuable to us.
The secular world of commercialism tells us it's Christmas, but in reality, we're in Advent. What's Advent all about? It's about waiting and preparing and making certain we don't miss out on the true reason for the season.
This sermon is from Dec. 23, 2012, service at Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church in Huxley, IA. We pray that you will be blessed by this message and that you will "Come and See" what God's doing at Shepherd of the Prairie.
People have a hard time with the laws of God and his ancient government from the Old Testament. Deut 21 and other laws cause people to overreact to God's goodness and justice without understanding the fairness of God. People cannot think like God, and most don't even try to. But this is why the narrow road follower of Jesus trusts in and knows God's law is for the protection of the innocent.

Last december 3, the Holy Father benedict XVI received the members of the community of the Venerable English College based in Rome. The meeting was the culmination of a year-long celebration marking the 650th anniversary of the of the founding of an English and Welsh Hospice on the site occupied by the College. Speaking to the seminarians the Holy father said, inter alia, "You have heard much talk about the new evangelization, the proclamation of Christ in those parts of the world where the Gospel has already been preached, but where to a greater or lesser degree the embers of faith have grown cold and now need to be fanned once more into a flame. Your College motto speaks of Christ's desire to bring fire to the earth, and your mission is to serve as his instruments in the work of rekindling the faith in your respective homelands. Fire in sacred Scripture frequently serves to indicate the divine presence, whether it be the burning bush from which God revealed his name to Moses, the pillar of fire that guided the people of Israel on their journey from slavery to freedom, or the tongues of fire that descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost, enabling them to go forth in the power of the Spirit to proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Just as a small fire can set a whole forest ablaze (cf. Jas 3:5), so the faithful testimony of a few can release the purifying and transforming power of God's love so that it spreads like wildfire throughout a community or a nation."
The "scandal" of the Cross, of which Saint Paul talks in his letter to the Corinthian (See 1Cor 1:21-22) . Nowadays seems to take the form of the "Scandal" of Purity. In fact today the most misunderstood and opposed of the beatitudes Jesus proclaimed, is this: "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God!" (Mt. 5,8)
