When my life doesn’t look like the life God promises in His Word, I'm confronted with a choice: Either I'm missing something or God is missing something. So do I believe God's standard is true for me—even though it seems utterly ridiculous—or do I somehow, through mental gymnastics, bring His standard down to my level?
As long as I continue to consider God's standard to be both true and achievable, then I will keep myself open to the possibility of being made whole. Yes, I might just die no better off than I am now. But then … I also might experience a life I never thought possible!
If, however, I dilute His standard down to my condition, and label myself as the exception—then I have no hope at all of even making any progress.

While most of us, in public, are quick to say that we believe whatever God says in His Word, we don't, in private, act much like we believe it. And God’s promises become only a collection of words in our brain. As long as we are caught up in small-minded thinking, we will believe that the problems we face can only be handled by somebody else with the right equipment—but not by us.
God, however, is reminding us that we are very well equipped (in cooperation with Him) to handle whatever comes against us!
