El Apocalipsis es una grande y valiosa consumación de las Escrituras. Bien puede ser considerado como un segundo Génesis: el principio del nuevo mundo de la vida espiritual perfecta en la ciudad de Dios. Así como el Génesis es el libro de las primeras cosas, el Apocalipsis es el libro de las últimas.
Este libro fue admitido en el canon de las Escrituras por sus propios méritos y, con excepción de las dudas sobre su autor, fue aceptado con muy poca oposición. Como parte integral de las sagradas Escrituras, Apocalipsis no debería ser evadido debido a su naturaleza predominantemente simbólica.
Aunque los teólogos liberales disputan sobre la paternidad literaria juanina de Apocalipsis, sus objeciones no nos apartan de la seguridad de que Juan, el discípulo amado (el que escribió el cuarto evangelio y las tres epístolas que llevan su nombre), fue también el autor de este último libro de la Biblia.
