What is a Health Coach and Why Do I Need One?

When it comes to our health, it’s easy to feel like we should be able to handle things on our own. We often think, “I know what I need to do, I just need to do it!” But the truth is, we all need support and accountability, especially when it comes to building lasting, healthy habits. That’s where a health coach comes in—someone who walks alongside you, cheering you on and helping you stay on track.

The Bible tells us the importance of having support and encouragement in our lives.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”

Just like in life, when it comes to your health journey, having someone to help you when you stumble can make all the difference.

What Does It Mean to Work with a Health Coach?

Working with a health coach isn’t about having someone judge you or act as the “food police.” In fact, a coach is there to do the opposite. An Optavia health coach provides encouragement and support, helping you navigate the program, connect with resources, and achieve your goals.

I heard this on a podcast recently: on average, people who try to lose weight without a coach might lose around 5 pounds in a month. But those who work with a coach lose an average of 15 pounds a month. That’s a big difference!

When I started my health journey, I worked with my coach, Amber Lia. Amber was such a blessing in my life—she encouraged me, shared recipes, gave me travel tips, and checked in with me regularly. We’d chat on Zoom, text, and even talk on the phone. Amber helped me stay focused, and now that I’m also a coach, she continues to support me as we co-coach together. Having her by my side made a world of difference, and I know it can do the same for you.

5 Reasons Why You Need a Health Coach

If you’re thinking about working with a health coach, here are five reasons why having a coach can transform your health journey:

  1. Accountability
We all need someone to keep us accountable. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Your coach will help you stay on track, check in with you regularly, and encourage you to keep going when the journey gets tough.
  2. Guidance and Support
A health coach is there to guide you through the program and provide you with the tools you need to succeed. They’ll share tips, recipes, and resources to help you make the best choices for your health.
  3. Experience and Wisdom
Coaches often have their own health stories to share, and their experience can be a great source of inspiration. When you’re working with someone who’s been through the program, they know what works and can share strategies that have helped them.
  4. Community
Being part of a community is so important for success. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” A coach helps you connect with others who are on the same journey, giving you a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
  5. Better Results
As I mentioned earlier, studies show that people who work with a coach tend to lose more weight and see better results than those who go it alone. Having someone to guide you, cheer you on, and help you troubleshoot makes all the difference.

Don’t Go It Alone

If you’re on the Optavia program and don’t have a coach, I encourage you to reach out! I’d love to help you get started. Or, if you already have a coach but feel like you’re not getting the guidance or support you need, reach out to them. Have an open and honest conversation about what you need and how you can work together. It helps you reach your goals and helps them become a better coach.

And if you’re feeling ready for a new level of accountability and connection, consider becoming a coach yourself! Coaching others not only helps you stay on track with your own health goals but also allows you to support others in their journey. It can provide both personal fulfillment and financial stability.

Action Step: Reach Out for Support

I want to encourage you to pick a day of the week to check in with your coach and make it part of your routine. If you don’t have a coach yet, or if you’re interested in becoming one, reach out to me! I would love to walk alongside you as you create healthy habits and find the strength and support you need to succeed.

Remember, we’re not meant to do this alone. Whether it’s in our faith or in our health, God has given us the gift of community and support. Lean on those around you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Together, we can achieve our goals and become the healthiest, strongest versions of ourselves.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” —1 Thessalonians 5:11
