Finding Peace and Happiness through Confession

Finding Peace and Happiness through Confession

In the complexity of human emotions, guilt and shame stand out as particularly challenging threads. These feelings are not strangers to many of us; indeed, they have woven their way through my life, creating a backdrop of darkness and despair. Perhaps you, too, have been haunted by these shadows, whether in your past or in your present moments. It’s a common realization that merely attempting to ignore such profound emotions does little to alleviate their burden.

Emotions serve as indicators, signaling the stirrings within our hearts. We often categorize them as “good” or “bad,” yet each emotion reflects the inner workings of our being. Guilt and shame, for instance, act as stark billboards, revealing our shortcomings against God’s standards and urging us toward reconciliation. The path to dissipating these complex emotions lies in addressing the root causes of our pain.

The First Step to Happiness: Confession

The journey towards a joyful heart begins with an act of confession. By turning to Jesus and openly acknowledging our sins, we engage in a process accepted and cherished by God. As Psalm 51:17 eloquently states, the Lord will not reject a broken spirit and a repentant heart. Through confession, Jesus erases our sins, offering us a clean slate and embracing our brokenness with open arms. However, this requires a willingness to confess and to accept the forgiveness granted.

A poignant metaphor for this spiritual process was illustrated when my daughter began to walk with a limp due to a tiny piece of glass lodged in her foot. Just as removing this shard brought relief and healing, acknowledging and addressing the source of our spiritual pain—sin—through confession can lead to profound healing.

Embracing God’s Forgiveness

Admitting our mistakes to God with humility lets Him cleanse our hearts of sin permanently. This confession may unleash a flood of pent-up emotions, but such release is necessary for healing. God designed us to experience and express our emotions as pathways to healing. Confessing and accepting God’s forgiveness are not easy tasks; they challenge us to change our habits and mindsets, even when our hearts have been transformed.

Walking in Freedom

A humorous observation of my daughter still occasionally limping, despite her healed foot, illustrates a deeper truth: sometimes, we continue to act out of habit, even when the original cause of our behavior has been addressed. Our hearts may be cleansed, but our minds linger on past sins, leading to unnecessary self-punishment and distancing from God. Romans 3:23–24 reminds us of God’s grace, which makes us right in His sight through Christ Jesus, freeing us from the penalty of our sins.

It’s Time to Confess

I encourage you to take a moment to let God search your heart (Psalm 139:23), to confess any sins, and to fully grasp that these sins are no longer part of you. Remember, Jesus’s sacrifice was not about creating a filter for God to overlook our sins but transforming us at our core, making us genuinely forgiven and righteous.

Understanding and accepting this transformative forgiveness fills our hearts with joy. Confession not only allows us to make room for God’s love but also opens our hearts to be filled with it.

Take this moment to bask in the newness of your heart, to feel God’s love that has always been there for you. As you breathe in and out, center your heart on the comforting knowledge that “Jesus loves me, this I know.”

5 Minutes to Connect with God

  1. Invite God to search your heart.
  2. Confess your sins and mistakes to Him.
  3. Visualize God erasing your sins, leaving no trace behind.
  4. Embrace your genuine forgiveness and ask God to help you see yourself through His eyes.
  5. Write Isaiah 1:18 on a notecard and place it where you’ll see it often, reminding you of God’s promise: “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be like wool.”

Embracing this practice not only brings peace to your heart but opens it wide to the boundless love and forgiveness offered by Jesus.
