Bible Reading
"Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." Romans 8:5-6
Listen or Read Below:
Last week, our garbage disposal bit the dust. It might have been easier if it had just stopped, but it felt like it was teasing me. The first text to my husband: “The garbage disposal just stopped working.” I flipped the electric fuse, and it popped back on. Smiley face emoji and thumbs up sent to my husband. But then it worked for less than a minute and shut off again. The fuse tripped once more. For two days, I fussed with it.
On day three, when my husband and I finally had time to look at it in detail, we discovered water dripping out of the bottom. This disposal was rusted out. Time for a new one.
It might seem silly, but was I allowing a garbage disposal to steal my peace? Did a kitchen appliance have the authority to sabotage me? No. But as with many issues, one broken thing and our minds rush into questions galore. How much will it cost? Why did this happen now? What a mess we have to clean up! And all that on top of an already full week. I was tempted to let that garbage disposal steal my peace, but I didn’t.
Is that the way it works in your life sometimes, too? Maybe it’s not a huge problem, but just big enough to capture your attention and steal your focus. Our minds latch onto whatever it is, and the peace? It leaks right out. (Kind of like the water going through the bottom of the garbage disposal.)
In today’s key passage, Paul describes two ways to live, and his point comes down to a word that has become a bit of a buzzword: mindset. “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires.” If we focus on the problems, guess what? We will be consumed by them for sure. The flesh keeps our eyes locked on the broken circumstances in front of us. But the Spirit lifts our eyes to Christ. The mind, governed by the Spirit, sees trouble as temporary and situations as moments that move us to rely on Jesus.
You can have the same sink, same leak, and the same full schedule, but two different mindsets create different perspectives. Only the mind focused on the Spirit holds peace.
Today, you will encounter a battle for your attention. Something will try to keep your mind leaning toward all the leaks and blown fuses. The enemy would love for you to be focused on unexpected expenses if he can get you to focus on them. Because the mind fixed on problems is the mind void of peace. But we are not left powerless, according to Paul. We are privileged to choose where we set our minds. Isn’t that amazingly good news?
If we choose to dwell on our circumstances, we will almost always end up discouraged, deflated, and eventually, defeated. But setting our minds on Christ means we always have hope. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the grave lives within us as Christ-followers. We can live in victory because, as Billy Graham used to say, “I’ve read the last chapter of the Bible, and it’s all going to turn out okay.”
Well, the garbage disposal has been replaced. The family schedule is still busy. And although I appreciate the perfectly working, brand-new disposal, I’m even more glad that my peace doesn’t live under the sink.
My peace is found in Jesus, and that peace thrives when I set my mind on Him.
Would you join me in that outlook today?
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
Peace can feel like something that drains away when problems come around. Whether it’s a broken appliance or an unexpected bill, my mind quickly rushes to circumstances.
Lord, forgive me for living with my mind set on what’s in front of me instead of on You. I’ve let broken things threaten to steal the peace you don’t want to lose. I’ve tried to fix things on my own that only You can handle.
Lift my eyes to You. When my thoughts lock on a problem, remind me that You are bigger. Set my mind on the Spirit so that life and peace can grow in place of worry. You are steady and loving, and I praise You for this.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Go Deeper: Emotional Overwhelm: Finding Christ’s Peace When You’ve Reached Your Limit
Do you feel emotionally overwhelmed—like you’re carrying more than you can handle and one more hardship or problem might break you? Have stress, anxiety, or burnout caused you to react in ways that don’t feel like you?
In this episode of Faith Over Fear, Jennifer Slattery and Carol McCracken talk honestly about emotional overwhelm, emotional capacity, and why prolonged stress and hardship can push even faithful, capable people past their limits. Through personal stories of caregiving, trauma triggers, disrupted sleep, ministry pressure, and relational strain, they explain why “pushing through” often leads to exhaustion, shame, and broken connections.
Turning to Scripture, they explore the life of David—a man after God’s own heart—who also experienced seasons of intense fear, grief, and emotional overload. His story shows us that overwhelm is not a spiritual failure and that God meets us with grace, not condemnation, when we’re in survival mode.
