Indiana Fever Guard Sophie Elizabeth Cunningham is known for her basketball skills on the court. In a recent interview (episode 692) on Theo Von’s podcast, This Past Weekend, however, her stance on faith and God’s love is taking many by surprise.
According to Relevant Magazine, when Von told Cunninghman he wished his connection with God were stronger, Cunningham told Von that “nothing a person does or doesn’t do can separate them from God’s love.”
Cunningham continued that while it’s easy to feel disconnected from God, He’s never far from us: “There’s nothing that you can or can’t do that’s going to separate you from God’s love and grace and forgiveness. Like that’s why Jesus came and died on the cross because he already knew everything you were going to do.”
After salvation, the six-foot-one fever guard believes that “educating yourself” and reading the Bible is important. However, she said that all hinges on knowing “you’re already forgiven.”
Cunningham added that she feels most connected to God when she is “prayed up.” When asked why she relies on her faith, she said it’s because of what she does for a living.
“You get a lot of hate, you get a lot of praise,” she said. Faith keeps her stable and “who I am,” she said, and she doesn’t care what people’s opinions are about her “because I’m not living for their praise.”
In the podcast, Von and Cunningham then discussed whether the media is unfair to Christians. Depending on perspective, Cunninghman said she loved seeing believers stand up for their faith.
“I feel like there’s a revival happening,” she said. She said it can be scary to speak up because people have had bad experiences with church, and that she likes seeing athletes with big platforms be “bold and courageous and come out about Jesus.”
